Educational Toys For Kids

JM Perez By JM Perez5 min read1.3K views

A few years ago, my Son then 2, asked me why I enjoyed reading and having so many books?  I told him that I read to be knowledgeable because knowledge doesn’t update itself and we must keep our minds active.

At my House, we love to read. My husband is a huge Mechwarrior/Battletech fan and has all the Books (and a large selection of action figures). I love reading Inspirational, Educational and Christian books and I have a bunch around the house. It only made sense for us to give our kids a good start in reading and learning. We visit the Libraries, Bookstores, we use the computer to read stories, play challenging games and much more.

I have been reading to my children since they were infants. At 5 months we started using the Laugh, Smile & Learn™ Computer Learning Systemand Amazing Animals™ Sing & Go Choo-Choo™ by Fisher-Price®. VTech® Baby’s Learning Laptop and Explore & Learn Helicopter. We used Magnetic Letters Set as well as Learning Blocks to identify numbers, letters, words and pictures.

Alpha Robot by Redbox

The recommended age: 18 months – 3 years.

Within a few weeks of owning this cool bilingual robot, my Son was able to recognized all the letters of the Alphabets as well as the numbers. I am sure this little robot triggered his love for reading. My Daughter used it to learn her ABCs too and loved it as much. She has long outgrown it.

  • Hear him speak letters, numbers and nursery rhymes in two languages (English & Spanish)
  • A great teacher for preschoolers, robot’s LED displays letters and numbers
  • Moveable head and arms delight young students
  • Alpha Robot Measures 8.5″ tall
  • Requires 2 “AA” batteries

The Fisher-Price Amazing Animals Sing and Go Choo-Choo is such an adorable interactive toy for kids. It remains one of my children favorite toys. It teaches them about animals through songs and play. You can add to the fun with even more Animals.

Learning Blocks Wagon

The recommended age: 2 years and up.

  • Animal Picture
  • Numbers (0-9)
  • Alphabet Letters (Upper and Lowercase)
  • Non-Toxic Coloring

These blocks are very educational; however, the size of the blocks will vary depending on the brand. It’s always a good habit to be around your children when they are playing with blocks to insure that nothing goes in their mouths and also to help them identify the objects.

I purchased one for my Son (as pictured below) when he was just one year old and he loved it. He enjoyed dragging the wagon around and learned so much from the blocks. Although Collections Etc. no longer carries the toy, you can get something similar such as Melissa & Doug Classic ABC Block Cart or Uncle Goose Classic Embossed Alphabet Blocks ABC.

Fisher-Price® Fisher Smart Cycle Extreme

When it comes to my super active Son, the Fisher Smart Cycle Extreme is a life saver for me. Given that my kids fight a lot over toys and because of the size of the Smart Cycle, I cannot purchase a second one. So, I only have them use it during Summer, when days are longer and sleep remains elusive most of the time.
I let them pedal until they can’t pedal no more and all they want is a good night sleep. The Fisher Smart Cycle Extreme is a great source of exercise while learning and my kids love it so much.

Paper, Crayons, Chalk & Chalkboard

One of the best things you can do for your child is put a paper and pencil in their hands to get them started on their writing skills. With a little luck, they can turn into great artists. Depending on the age of your child, some supervision may be required (to see that nothing goes in the mouth and or on the walls).

Snow Day Closure

JM Perez By JM Perez1 min read545 views

What a cold and windy day! I was awakened very early in the morning by a bright light coming through the window in the dark night. I slowly got out of bed, moved the curtain and as I took a peek through the blinds, I realized it was snowing! I instantly grabbed my camera, woke up the hubby, opened the front door and began taking pictures of the front yard. Such a beautiful sight, I whispered. Everything always looks better and cleaner when covered in white and this was no exception. We stood there, for a few minutes, watching the Snow fall. The magic continued for another hour and then the Snow began melting quite rapidly.

Snow Storm.

The School Principal called at around 5:00 AM to let us know that the School was closed for the day due to the Snow. That’s was a relief given that nothing was posted on the School’s website. The kids were a little disappointed that they missed the Snow because they really wanted to play in the Snow, make snow angels and build a Snowman as it was the case in 2011.

We are thankful to be Home, blessed by the company of one another and enjoying our favorite movies together.

Lifestyle Choices

JM Perez By JM Perez3 min read647 views

I have been feeling like an embryo in my Mother’s womb; able to hear people’s conversations, to feel their pain, but unable to help out. There is a contagious virus going around robbing individuals of their sight, blinding them with a lie, stripping them of their most priceless possession they will come to own and placing uncertainty on their mind.
Some people, when faced with tragedy, meltdown, deception, disappointments, betrayal (you name it) are too quick to point the finger at others, too quick to give up and get out rather than stand tough and work things out.

Due to the amount of pain I am witnessing around me, I’ve been thinking about Lifestyle choices and couldn’t help but wonder if they sometimes cause us more damage than good? We are always so obsessed with focusing on material things or looking for something (supposedly bigger and/or better) that we are never really able to enjoy what we have, that we are never really in touch with ourselves. This can often be seen in relationships and such choices make a huge difference between Happiness and  despair, between love and heartache.

“Do not nurse hatred in your heart for any of your relatives. Confront people directly so you will not be held guilty for their sin.” ― Leviticus 19:17 (NLT)

We are all victims of the bad economy. So many of us have lost our homes, our jobs and in extreme cases, our self-esteem. Are these reasons valid enough to take them a step further by pointing fingers, threatening and ending a relationship? Is the loss of a loved one more important than the well-being of the living? Is the pain so unbearable that we believe inflicting it on others might give us some closure or help us heal faster? How does one treat a sibling wrongly, turning family members against a sibling and then play the victim?

How do we go from loving someone one minute to hating them the next?
Cutting Cords is sometimes necessary to end an unloving relationship and take time to heal. For instance, when a couple’s needs become incompatible or when they stop having the same vision. If it ever comes down to that, the best approach is to Part in Love, ending the relationship with Love and Respect for one another.

We are a Society who have come to believe that silence is the ultimate treatment for those who don’t see things our way. In other words, we think that withholding communication to others is as effective as punishing them. Hatred for someone or something is a weakness as it doesn’t make us think straight. When we are consumed by anger and consciously decide not to let go, we are actually inflicting more pain unto ourselves. Lingering on robs us of so much and leaves us empty. We attract so much negative energy, our heart darkens, we become deaf to the voice of reason and we are unable to receive the healing grace of God.

“Love is not a dead sentence and should never be used as a weapon of destruction.” ― Joan Ambu

Our daily decisions can either help us move forward and excel in life or hold us back. The choice is always ours. Too often we change/rearrange things when ideally we should be supportive, patient, understanding and loving while things fall into place on their own. Our Lifestyle choices reflect our values, determine our future and can either empower us to do great things or drive us to lose what is most important.

“Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.” ― Romans 13:8 (ESV)

A Few Vintage Finds

JM Perez By JM Perez2 min read866 views

As a promise to our Son, we drove to Downtown Pomona this afternoon to check out the shops.
We went early to give ourselves plenty of time to go around each individual aisle. We started at the Olde Towne Pomona Antique Mall, where I ended up buying a vintage 1978 Carol Rardon figurine (made of plaster).

We then proceeded to the Pomona Antique Mart, where I picked up a huge and stunning Copper Wall Shelf Sconce before heading to Cheryl’s Antiques.

At Cheryl’s Antiques I bought a vintage 1950’s Roldan Doll (dressed as a Flamenco dancer). She originates from and was produced in Barcelona, Spain from the 1950’s to early 1970’s as touristy souvenirs and she is available in fun variety of designs. She has a gorgeous ruffle dress, a beautiful and remarkable facial features and holds felt castanets in her hands with a few pom poms hanging down. She’s gorgeous and my daughter thinks so too.

I also bought an Italian Wall Plaque of the blessed Mary and Baby Jesus (possibly a Fontanini). It’s weird because I touched this piece last December while we were piking up a few items at Cheryl’s and placed it right back where I found it, as I got distracted by my daughter. It was at home that I realized that I didn’t purchase it. I was amazed to find it today, on the exact spot where I left it almost two months ago and I immediately grabbed it.
It’s such a beautiful vintage piece of Madonna and her beloved Child.

Cheryl carries a few Boudoir Dolls in very good condition with their original clothing and accessories. If you are interested in purchasing these dolls or know someone who will, please contact Cheryl for pricing information.

Prior to returning home, we made a last stop at Ikea to purchase some Chocolate, which is available in Dark, Milk, and Hazelnut and are 99¢ each or 3 for $2.49. Ikea® Food Chocolate bars are pretty much my next favorites after Godiva® and Ghirardelli®. We all enjoy them here at home as well as sharing them with Family and Friends.

Pink Tulips and Ghirardelli®

JM Perez By JM Perez1 min read565 views

Today has been an awesome day all around as we woke up to a bright, warm sun shining day. Like every single morning, the first thing my toddler does is spoil both my husband and I with sweet kisses. She always tells me: “I like you Mommy. It’s you and me together forever.” I always fight the urge of shedding a tear or two when I am in her presence. But oh! How I love this darling little girl; she is so conscious and so affectionate.

My smart and energetic kindergartener had a Valentine’s Card exchange at school today and he said it was fun. I guess it’s always fun when Desserts, Snacks and Treats are involved. He can have it all as long as he keeps up with the fantastic job! I received very good news from his Teacher yesterday and I am so proud of him.

Above you can see the beautiful Pink Tulip bouquet I received from my better half this morning. I placed it on my gorgeous Vintage wood bottomed tray with a nature scene inlay featuring a bird perched on Bamboo and a 3″ high wicker surround. I also received a Ghirardelli® SQUARES™ Premium Chocolate Assortment Heart Tin (Milk Chocolate with Caramel Filling, Dark Chocolate with Raspberry Filling and Dark Chocolate with White Mint Filling), which the kids immediately owned. Great things come in small packages and I am very grateful for today.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
