DIY: Footstool Reupholstered

JM Perez By JM Perez2 min read987 views

Last month, while visiting my favorite Vintage Shops here in the High Desert, I decided to make a quick stop at the Estate Liquidators. I have found so many beautiful vintage choice pieces here and I purchased a small vintage footstool that same day. What I love the most about this little beauty is its primitive feel.

Today I gave it a makeover with a new coat of paint and a pink Toile de Jouy fabric.

I started by carefully removing the staples that were holding the fabric in place and took off the old upholstery fabric. I found some light cracks here and there, which I patched up with wood glue (which also helped fill out the gaps and secure the pieces), letting it dry. I then proceeded to sand and clean the stool to get it ready for the painting.

Materials Needed:

  • Staples and Heavy Duty Stapler
  • Foam
  • Batting (to cover your Foam)
  • Spray Adhesive (to keep your Foam in place)
  • Choice Fabric for Bow
  • Scissors (to trim the excess Fabric)
  • Flat-head Screwdriver and Pliers (to lift up the staples and pull them out).

Optional:

  • Button Cover Kit
  • Drill and Drill Bits (to drill holes in your Foam and Wood)
  • Upholstery Thread
  • Sharpie (to mark holes on the wood)
  • Decorator Needles

Step by step:

  • Mark your hole on the wood where you want your button to go and drill a hole using your drill and drill bit.
  • Cut your foam to the size and shape of the wood.
  • Spray adhesive on the wood to keep the foam in place.
  • Use your batting to secure the foam to your wood with a staple gun.
  • Place and attach your fabric over the foam and start stapling.
  • Cover your button with the same fabric.
  • Run some thread through the button and push the threaded needle up through the pre-drilled hole (once satisfied, staple the thread at the bottom of the wood to secure and hold it in place).

I love how it turned out and my daughter now has a new reupholstered footstool for her dolls.

Cute Vintage Finds

Early this afternoon we returned to the Estate Liquidators to purchase what was left of the 1920’s-1940’s Vintage Chippendale Pull with cast iron bail a couple of weeks earlier (see them here). This time I made sure I took all the dismantled pieces of the drawers including those I left behind last time.

My husband found a couple of old gardening tools he’s been wanting to acquire for a long time. My boy was more interested in Shells and got a few for a craft project. As for my daughter, she found two of her favorite characters stuffed toys which she immediately grabbed. A ballerina Smurfette and Hello Kitty, both vintage. The Smurfette was produced by Applause, Inc. (founded as Wallace Berrie & Co., Inc) and is marked 1984 Peyo.

The Hello Kitty is a 1996 nylon plush doll and was distributed in the  United States by Sanrio, Inc.

As for me, I found a few things. The one I love the most is this tall Vintage Grey Smoke Glass Cylinder Vase.

My second favorite vintage find is a 1977 Lil’ Miz “Whisk-It” (Millet Grass Whisk-Broom) by Westwood Import Co., Inc. This beauty comes right on time as I will be making my Fall wreath in a few day and she will play an important part.

Vintage Chippendale Pulls

While driving around the city this morning we decided to make a stop at the Estate Liquidators. It’s always a delight visiting this little shop, especially the outdoor space where we’ve found beautiful pieces in the past. Our visit wasn’t any different from the previous ones as we’ve never left the shop empty handed. As I was admiring a multi-level wrought iron plant holder, I saw a set of gorgeous vintage drawers with Chippendale Pulls from the 1940’s out of the corner of my eye and I knew they were coming home with me. The Pulls are made from brass, they are charming, unique, a little rusty and show age worn patina.

I bought the drawers for the pulls, so when I removed them and saw the imprints they left into the wood I promised myself to restore the drawers and possibly used them as planters. From the shape (rounded front) and size of the wood (all original), the pieces appear to have come from a small desk or vanity. Once the pieces are put together, I might use it as a tray or to hold my indoor plant

I have so much to do this coming weekend and restoring a few gorgeous vintage drawers is one of the many projects on my list. Most likely going to the movies with the family.

Finds from Estate Liquidators

Fridays has always been our favorite day of the week to go treasure hunting at Antique, Vintage and Shabby Chic shops. It’s the best day of the week to shop with fewer competition and minimal traffic as every one is either still at work or prefer weekend shopping. Yesterday we found a few vintage items at the Estate Liquidators.

The Tiny Vintage Ceramic Planter above was nested inside a vintage wine glass. I intend to use it as a Pen holder.

I have been looking for a vintage serving tray for a while to work on a project. As I was walking around the shop, my eyes cut a glimpse of something shiny. At first I thought it was some type of decorative mirror as I could clearly see my own reflection. The shop owner told me that it had never been used and that she had just taken in out of its package. It’s a lovely Stainless Steel Tray with charming gold handles.

I found a gorgeous (hand blown glass) Vintage Italian Wine Decanter with Ice Chamber to keep your beverages cool. I am not sure if it ever had the two cork stoppers that most have. It does make a unique decorative piece.

The best treasure of the day was this beautiful vintage 1963 Olivetti Lettera 32 Portable Mechanical Italian Typewriter designed by Marcello Nizzoli for Olivetti as the successor of the popular Olivetti Lettera 22.
It came with its case and it’s in excellent condition. My husband tried it out and it works great. All we have to do now is purchased some Ink Ribbon and we’ll be good to go.

We also found a wall hanging, Vintage German Barometer with Porcelain Dial under glass.

When it comes to beverages and to wine precisely; I am a light non-alcoholic wine drinker. I love wine glasses. There is something about them that I can quite grasp. Perhaps is the elegance, the feel and the shape of the glass? These glasses would definitely make for a lively evening.

I was so delighted to find a pair of Vintage Metal Plant Stand, which I restored. I started by washing it, removing the rusted areas with a wire brush and smoothing it out with a sandpaper. I primed first and spray painted it (to seal the metal surface and prevent future rusting). They are gorgeous and I can’t wait to use them.
